Healthy Pastrami Deli Wrap

Here's a recipe from this issue of Taste of Home magazine for a healthy pastrami deli wrap.
This would be yummy with a bit of horseradish!

Prep/Total Time: 20 min.
Yield: 4 Servings

1/4 cup reduced-fat spreadable cream cheese
1/4 cup coarsely chopped roasted sweet red pepper
4 spinach tortillas (8 in.)
4 lettuce leaves
4 slices of deli pastrami
4 slices reduced-fat provolone cheese
1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion
1 small sweet red pepper, julienned
1/2 cup chopped cucumber

Place cream cheese and roasted pepper in a small food processor. Cover and process until blended. Spread over tortillas. Layer with remaining ingredients; roll up. Secure with toothpicks.

Nutrition Facts:
1 wrap equals 271 calories, 10 g. fat (4 g. saturated fat), 29 mg. cholesterol, 697 mg. sodium, 29 g. carbohydrate, 1 g. fiber, 15 g. protein. Diabetic exchanges: 2 lean meat, 1-1/2 starch, 1 vegetable, 1 fat

Finally tried Muscle Maker Grill

Tonight I finally had the opportunity to give a new restaurant in the area a try. It's called Muscle Maker Grille, here in Edgewater, and it was delicious! They even delivered.

I had the Godfather entree. It was 2 grilled chicken breasts with portabella mushrooms, roasted red peppers, and low-fat mozzarella cheese over steamed broccoli with this delicious balsamic dressing. I ordered a side of their cucumber salad which was basically fresh cukes with red onion in vinegar with seasoning. Also very good. We ordered a side of steamed veggies for Saxon too, and they arrived perfectly cooked. Damon had the Rocky Balboa wrap, which was grilled chicken, turkey meatballs, low-fat mozzarella cheese and low-carb pizza sauce in a tortilla. He said it was good too.  It came with a baked potato. All of this and it only cost $25.00. I thought that was pretty reasonable. And the best part - it was a pretty healthy meal, and tasty to boot!

The shoes feel good

I tried out my new cycling shoes this morning in Spin class. While they didn't change the ride that dramatically for me, I did notice a few improvements. My knees definitely hurt less than normal. However, my toes continue to go a little numb. The instructor said that the shoes need to break in and in a month or so, that should stop. At any rate, it was kind of funny trying to lock those clips into place on the pedals the first time! I think that takes a while to get used to as well.

After spin class, it was another day of Body Pump. So, while I didn't have personal training this week (my trainer is on vacation), i did get several days of lifting in.

This weekend I'll be visiting family, and hope to get a lot of walking in. And I vow to eat well too!

Advice from Debbie Siebers, Creator of Slim in 6

Last week I emailed several celebrity fitness professionals (you know, the well-recognized women and men with best-selling exercise videos, infomercials and programs with household names), asking if they could offer any bit of advice for my blog. I thought that it would not only be very exciting, but also meaningful, credible and something we all remember for a long time.

The beautiful Debbie Siebers responded. I could hardly believe it! For those not in the know, Ms. Siebers is the creator of Slim in 6 through BeachBody and the Total Body Solution, as well as the Slim Series (please visit her website to learn more: www.debbiesiebers.com). In addition to over 20 years as a fitness expert, she also adds product creator, producer and host to her resume.

And let me tell you - she is as nice as can be. With a very busy schedule, appointments and commitments, she still found time to share her insight with me. Let's face it - in a world where most people only do something if they get something in return, this high profile woman took time for a gal with a blog of only 13 followers. (here's hoping you spread the word and we grow more followers!)

Here's what Debbie Siebers had to share:

My philosophy has always been that you need to live in the moment and be positive about life. No matter what is thrown at you....you have to realize that you are in complete control and responsible for everything that is happening to you.
I am a firm believer of "The Secret" and applying the laws of attraction. What you focus on and what you think about consistently is what you will manifest into your life.
If you continually think "I Can't Do It", or "It's too Late for Me", or "I don't have the time".....then that is exactly what will be true.
If you can learn to change those thoughts when they occur and instantly replace them with a positive one, repeating it over and over until it truly resonates within you, your life will slowly or even quickly begin to change for the better.

The truth is we all have the time. You just have to make it a priority. Also, we all need to take care of ourselves, respect ourselves and love ourselves enough to do what is right.
Afterall, this is our one and only life, so we should make the most of it, right?

It always makes me so incredibly sad when I see so many people spending the majority of their lives feeling miserable about themselves.....when all it takes is exercising regularly and eating healthy to turn that all around.
You will have a new attitude. You will feel in control. You will have more energy and be more productive. You will be happier.
You will look and feel better and everyone around you will benefit.

So, my advice is......START RIGHT NOW. Today is the day!
Take it one step at a time and don't overwhelm yourself with the entire staircase.
Accept yourself today! Love yourself today and know that each and every day you will only get better.....

You know the saying.....TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!!!!!!!
I hope you make it a great one!

Going Insane in Spin Class

Today's spin class was awesome! I think it was the music. Once again Hazel plays these techno/rock mixes I have never heard, but loved. In fact, this one song, that I am going to post here, was so freaking cool. Listen to this beat, you can feel it's power and speed. It made me feel like I was chasing down a purse-snatcher and then whooping his ass!!
And it's not just the music that gets me going, it's the things Hazel says. For instance, during this song when the singer is repeating "insane," and you hear the music lulling, we are standing on our bikes (in 2nd position-hands at the front of the handlebar) in what's considered a recovery period. We're still pedaling fast, but catching our breath.

At this point in a song, it's easy to want to turn your gears back down and rest, because you know a "push" is coming. The music is building, you hear the crescendo about to break, and you know it's gonna be time to turn up the gears and pedal as fast as you can in standing 3rd position (hands on the ends of the grips). Imagine, your legs are on fire, your heart wants to bust through your chest, and all you want is for it to end.

At that moment I'm about to reach down and turn the gears back, to make it easier, give myself a break. The music starts building and then I hear Hazel say, "I can't make you turn up the gears, I can't make you pedal faster. It's all up to you. " And just when the thump-thump-thump of the music gets louder and faster and is about to explode, she shouts, "WHAT WILL YOU CHOOSE TO DO?!!!!!!!!"

I swear, between that song and those words, I was compelled, and I don't use that word lightly - I was forced to turn up my gears a full turn, and pedal like I have never pedaled before! Yee-haw! I am sure I let out a holler and felt this incredible feeling of power inside. And it lasted all the way through class. In fact, I feel pretty darn invincible right now. Thanks Hazel!

Make clean up good exercise too

Today during stroller strides, our instructor had us play a "game" for increasing our heart rates. She took a whole bunch of plastic cups and threw them down on the ground, covering a pretty good sized area. Then we counted off in 1's and 2's. The one's had to shuffle around in squat position while sitting the cups upright, the 2's had to shuffle around and turn the cups facing downward on the ground. As we got started, my friend Lucy said, "this is just like cleaning up at home!"

And she was right - how many times a day do you find yourself bending over to pick something up off the floor? Especially the parents out there...don't you find yourself picking up matchbox cars or barbie doll clothing around the clock? I do, and the next time I have a whole fleet of cars or trains laying in the middle of the room, I am going to remember good form: squat down like you're hovering over a dirty public toilet (which means stick your butt out behind you), your weight should be in your heels, your chest should be lifted , and reach down by bending at the knees and squatting - not bending at the waist and dropping your head.

Do this and you'll be the queen/king of multi-tasking - cleaning and getting a little exercise too!

Wednesday's Stroll

Hi all. On Wednesday's I take an outdoor exercise with a group of mommies, called Stroller Strides. For the regular readers of this blog, you're familiar with SS. For those who are not, it's an hour of pushing our kids in strollers along the river, in addition to bouts of resistance training with bands.

It was so hot and humid outside, i think I sweated off at least a few pounds! And Saxon did a great job today with staying in his stroller. A plus on both accounts!

We walked all the way to City Place, and did several rounds of push-ups, flys, shoulder presses, bicep curls, tricep kickbacks and much more. I am really sore from yesterday, so I felt every single move. And the running - whew! In that heat, I was really feeling  fatigued.
I was glad when it was time to pack up and go home!

Today's Exercise

I'm almost 4 weeks into this adventure toward renewed sexiness, and I'm getting better everyday.

Today I whooped some imaginary ass in my kick-boxing class. Finally, I had the opportunity to try a class with Albert. He had guest-appeared in my usual Tuesday kick-boxing class a few weeks ago, and his intensity and Bruce Lee kung-fu moves were infectious! So, when I walked in and saw him subbing for the usual instructor, I was psyched.

In his hour of body chops, jumping knee thrusts, kicks, and punches, I felt my heart growing stronger by the second - I swear! The oxygen was flowing, and my body was on fire! We did several sets of bent over punches toward the floor, followed by thrusting our one knee at the invisible opponent down on the ground. Pity that poor sucka!

After his class I stayed for the next class - Body Pump. Body Pump is an hour of lifting weights with a bar and plates. It covers all major body parts. I upped my weight today and can feel it already. My shoulders are getting sore, and my legs and glutes hurt as well. A buff woman named Shannon teaches this class, and I have to say, that just watching her is all the inspiration I need. She has the legs of a warrior woman - strong, toned and fabulous. I hope to wear the same kind of booty-shorts she wears and look like her someday, soon. In a week would be good.

The rest of the day involved plenty of play time with Saxon. Have you ever noticed how much it hurts your ass to bend over and push around a kid on a tricycle? And a walk for Charlotte of course. I can't forget my loyal work-out partner! I think we're both getting leaner!

And thanks to all of my friends who have been commenting on my blog on Face Book. It means a lot to me!

A Recommendation for P90X

A fitness instructor friend of mine, named Lisa, has this endorsement for the popular P90X program, and I thought I would share it with you.

From my perspective.. it the best workout I have ever done and I'm seeing results for the first time ever.. Its hard! Pushups.. pull ups.. plyometrics...craziness.. but I feel so much stronger and leaner doing it! I would recommend it to anyone! The only stipulation is its not for beginner workout people. P90 is for beginners .. p 90X is for people already in shape looking to take their workout to the extreme!

My hubby has the DVD's too. I think I will start doing them when my sessions with my personal trainer end. For more info you can go to their website: www.beachbody.com

Oh where oh where have my followers gone?

For the last couple of days now, I have not been able to see my list of followers. I miss you guys!
Just curious if it's just my system, or if all of you can still see them.

Please leave a comment and let me know if you see followers listed. I've contacted Blogger to make them aware of the problem.

Thanks!!

Shira-what??

I saw this on Facebook and had to post it. First I have to find these noodles, and then give them the taste-test. But, can you believe the calorie differences listed?? Wow! Thanks to Raquel who commented on the Fitness Magazine FB post.

Shirataki noodles. They are soy based and have way less calories than regular pasta. I like to sub them for rice with stir fry meals. Just add them in to the wok at the very end to heat. Make sure to rinse them first. Try them out!

Edamame Guacamole

This recipe includes two of my favorite things: edamame and gaucamole! Thank you to the Whole Foods website, where I found it. And what a fabulous store - just across the street from my house!

Makes about 2 cups

Made with a combination of avocado and edamame, the flavor of this guacamole variation is both creamy and fresh. Serve with raw vegetables like celery, carrots and radishes for dipping or alongside tortilla chips as a healthy snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

1 cup frozen shelled edamame, thawed  1 small, ripe avocado, peeled and pitted  1 chipotle pepper in adobo, finely chopped (optional)  1/3 bunch cilantro  1/4 white onion, roughly chopped  Juice of 2 limes  2 to 3 tablespoons water  Salt and pepper

Method

Put edamame, avocado, chipotle, cilantro, onion, and lime juice in a food processor and pulse until almost smooth. Add enough water to make a creamy consistency and pulse again. Transfer guacamole to a bowl, season with salt and pepper and serve.

Monday morning at the gym

This morning I did the usual - spinning with Hazel, followed by Boot Camp class.
I rocked the spin class - had on some new bike shorts - and worked my ass off in there. I think a lot of it has to do with Hazel's music. She plays really cool mixes.

Boot Camp continues to be tough for me after I do the spin class, because of all the plyometric jumping. My knees just hurt like a mother. But, I do love all of her weight-resistance exercises. We do a lot of 2-for-1 jobbers - like squatting with a bar and raising the bar overhead when we stand up from the squat. So, we're working the legs and shoulders at the same time. Way to get it done!

Today I tried a new protein shake brand too, from GNC, called Lean Shake. It was wonderful! Rich, and very vanilla-flavored! I highly recommend it.

And the day's meals were very good too. For breakfast I had yogurt, a half banana, and 1/2 cup of granola. Lunch was sliced turkey, and avacado (with my shake), and for dinner we grilled chicken breast, and I ate it over a delicious salad with grilled mushrooms.

I stopped and got some fine-looking peaches this afternoon. One might just call my name soon!

Who says shopping isn't exercise?

Yesterday I went shopping with my husband and 2-year old. We drove to this outlet center in NY. It's a huge complex with tons of stores. I almost felt guilty on the drive to the center, because I hadn't been to the gym. But, as I reflect on the day, it was most certainly a workout.

First of all, as in any day of marathon shopping, there is a lot of walking to be done. I wish I had been wearing a pedometer. But, I was just proud that we chose to park in one spot, and walk from one section of the complex to another, instead of driving over, like so many people chose to do.

And walking isn't the only exercise I got, on several occasions I worked my legs. How you ask? In the notorious squat-over-the-seat move that women know so well. I had been chugging water, and needed to use the bathroom a few times. Yuck! They were your typical public restrooms. Smelly and dirty. So, instead of lowering myself onto the questionable seats, I hovered above and did my business. So much water leads to long bouts of squatting! So, my quads got a workout too.

This particular center had several areas for children to play, including coin-operated rides. Saxon saw them, and just had to ride EVERY SINGLE one! That resulted in lifting my 45-pound boy out of his stroller and into the machines. Over and over again. The arms got their share that day as well.

So, while it wasn't kick-boxing at the gym, I did break a sweat a few times. And in the process, took home some new workout gear from the Nike Factory Store. A win in my book!

New Stroller -Can't wait for Stroller Strides

I got a new stroller today, and I cannot wait for Wednesday when i can try it out at Stroller Strides. I know I've mentioned this class before that is led by a great lady, Ana. She teaches in Edgewater and Hoboken. Here's a darling video, that gives you a great idea of what it's all about!

Sorbet vs. Frozen Yogurt?

I found this on CookingLight.com. I love sorbet! That gets my vote!

With similar calorie profiles, both sorbet and frozen yogurt are smart choices for cool summer treats―especially when chosen in place of ice cream. Sorbet is a combination of fruit, water, and juice, making it naturally fat-free. Since it contains no dairy, sorbet is ideal for the lactose intolerant, but it lacks calcium and protein. A half-cup portion of nonfat frozen yogurt, made from dairy, provides four grams of satiating protein and 15 percent of your daily calcium requirement.

I can see my collar-bones!

I know I haven't posted any results yet on how my new fitness regimen is coming along. To be honest, I haven't weighed myself or measured myself since we started. However, in 2 weeks I am having it done at the gym.

I will say that in the 3 weeks since I changed my eating habits, kicked up my exercise and started training with a professional I do see some differences. The first is not one I am happy about - my boobies are getting smaller! I know it's inevitable, but still. I just keep telling myself that if the boobs are shrinking the rest of me is next.

This morning I noticed my collar bones sticking out. Just a little, but they are definately visible now. Guess that layer of fluff over them is going away!

My arms and legs are becoming more toned too. I feel stronger as well. Mentally I am changing too - I feel better about myself. Going to the gym each day makes me feel good - I can't really explain it. It's like getting that runner's high that marathoners speak of. (I wouldn't know, I am not a runner. But, I am sure my friend Desiree could tell us all about it. She loves to run!)

At any rate, I look forward to the results I'll see in 2 weeks. Hope to share some good news with you all!

Looking for a good tasting protein powder

I am disappointed. I have never been much of a protein drinker, but my trainer recommends a protein shake after our workouts. So, I bought a new can of mix for women, called Aria. It's a 50:50 whey/soy protein that is designed for women, with a controlled glycemic response.
Today I mixed my first shake according to directions: 2 scoops to 8oz. water. I added ice and gave the cup a good shake. It was ice cold, just how I like my drinks. I swallowed, and waited. Nothing. Really, I tasted nothing. It was like some very watered down milky water. It's the vanilla variety. I love all things in vanilla flavor, and hoped it would have a nice rich flavor. Nada.
I honestly couldn't bring myself to drink it. Down the drain it went and instead I had some grilled chicken.

So, if anyone has a good protein powder to recommend, feel free. I'll keep looking.

Now I know how a donkey feels!

Today's personal training was a real butt-kicker. I even got a little nauseated at one point. There was a lot of leg exercises that got my heart rate soaring. She even turned me into a work horse - I had to pull her along behind me while I did walking lunges across the fitness room floor. We did so with a band around my waist. She's a little thing, but I envisioned those poor donkeys I see on the Amish farms of Lancaster County, pulling farmers along to plow fields. I felt like the donkey!

Next session I am going to begin taking photos of "the exercise of the day," and post them here, with instructions on how to complete the exercise, along with the benefits. That way, you too, can join in the fun! Hee-haw!!

To Buy Shoes or Not Buy Shoes? Is that really a question!

Seriously though, while I may be a shoe-hound, I am questioning if I really want to buy a pair of shoes for spinning class. I have heard from the instructors that the cycling shoes that attach onto the pedals of the bikes make all the difference. They claim these shoes make you more productive, and that once you start using these shoes, you'll never want to spin again in regular sneakers.

I am considering them for a couple of reasons: my feet sometimes cramp up or go numb when I am spinning. I am hoping the shoes would alleviate that. I also want to get the most out of these classes. So, if the shoes can give me a better workout, I'm all for it.

So, if any of you have used spinning shoes, and feel they are a good investment, please comment. I'd love to hear your thoughts. And if you recommend a particular brand, that's helpful too.

Now if I could find something to cushion my tailbone! hee hee

Anyone ever try the leg toning shoes by Reebok?

I read this article online about these shoes and had to share it. Note, the shoes cost $110.

I think they are kind of ugly, but would be willing to try them if they really did make a difference.

What if someone told you that there was a walking shoe that tones your legs and booty while you walk? Well, Reebok just released a new sneaker that does a little something extra to help you get your lower body in shape, and Seventeen had a chance to try it out. So, what did we think of the new Reebok EasyTone Go Outside walking shoe?

Well, it sure feels like it works (we were sore in a good way!), which made us want to find out how it actually does all of that while you walk! Basically, it uses two strategically placed pockets of air under the ball of the foot and the heel to create a natural instability (kind of like you're balancing on one of those Bosu balance balls!), and this forces your leg muscles to work harder. The shoe is totally comfortable, too. It actually feels like you're walking on a soft, sandy beach every time you lace up!

Drama at the gym today

While I don't have much new and exciting to report on my day's exercise, I do have a funny story.
I went to the gym this morning for a spin class. In the spin studio, there's two sides of the room: the fan zone, and the no-fan zone. That just means that they turn the fans on in one side of the room, and on the other side of the room they stay turned off. Apparently there are some folk out there who prefer to ride in a sauna. They don't WANT the fans turned on. I guess they think by sweating more they are getting  a better workout.

I think they are crazy. Give me air, and give me a lot of it! So, I perch myself in the fan-zone. In fact, I choose a bike that gets blasted by a high-powered fan from both behind and in front of my face. There's nothing like pedaling my ass off, and imaging I am speeding down a big hill, with the wind whipping in my hair.

As I entered the spin room, I noticed someone had moved my wonderful fan, and pointed it toward the wall. Of course, I moved it back to where it belonged. I left the room for a quick trip to the bathroom, and when I got back, I was stopped outside the room by a nice lady who was upset because a "crazy lady" had moved the fan and pointed it toward the wall again. I was told that this woman once "flipped out" on the last person who had tried to point the fan toward the bikes. Apparently, "crazy lady" belonged in the no-fan zone, but chooses to spin on the wrong side, and make everyone's ride miserable.

I alerted the instructor that our side would like the fan pointed at the bikes, and not the wall. Immediately "crazy lady" gets off her bike and starts playing with the fans to divert the wind, while the folks who like it gusty, told her to move over to the other side of the room . It was hysterical! She stayed put for about 20 minutes into the class, and then got off her bike in an obvious huff, and left the studio. I think I heard a few cheers! Someone later told me this lady uses 4 lockers in the ladies locker room, and has been told to leave the gym a few times. I don't know about that, but I do know that I'll be looking forward to my next ride. Stay tuned - these our the days of our lives!!

A delicious goodie that's good for you

I found a new favorite goodie! The Chocolate Peppermint Stick Luna Bar. I was first introduced to Luna bars during a Stroller Strides class with Ana. She handed them out to the moms participating. I believe they are a national partner with Stroller Strides.
So today I was in Trader Joes, and found a pretty good sized variety of Luna Bar flavors. I was really hoping to get a White Chocolate Macadamia Nut variety, but they didn't have it. However, this Chocolate Peppermint Stick is so yummy! It really tasted like candy!
The Luna motto is "Whole Nutrition for Women." This bar has 9 g. of protein (perfect for that rule of getting in your protein within 15 minutes of weight-training), and 3 g. of fiber. One bar has 180 calories, 2.5 g. saturated fat, 0 g trans fat, 26 g. total carb. The package says they are high in calcium and folic acid (good for those women looking to get pregnant). And it's rich in antioxidants. And at just 99¢ you can't beat it for a nutrition bar!

Fat burners?

Does anyone recommend a fat burner? Anyone have a good experience with any particular brand?

I'll be honest - back in the day, when ephedra was legal, I took Stacker and it gave me great energy, mental clarity and surely, helped me stay thin.  However, now that ephedra is no longer available (at least I can't find any), and now that I have a son to grow old for, I hesitate to take anything that might negatively affect my health.

So, I am wondering, is there a fat burner that will help me out, but not give me health problems?

And yes, I know, the treadmill is a fat burner!

The Bosu is not your friend!

Hi all. It's Tuesday at 8 pm, and I finally can tell you about my personal training today.
It was tough today. More so than usual and i think it's because I put in so many miles this weekend, and partly due to the not-so-good food I ate. My body was just sweating out the sodium from my chinese food!

Anyway, I started the day with an hour of kickboxing with Cheryl, which rocked. Then began the pain - an hour of PT. Today we did a lot of leg work, using a step machine I was not familiar with. It had a platform that I put one foot on, and I would step putting the weight on that leg, while tapping the platform with my other foot, and coming back down deep on the leg on the floor. We did several sets, and then bounced on the leg on the floor, which caused the leg on the platform to really burn! Later I did squats and leg lifts while balancing on the bosu. For those not familiar with a bosu, it's like a big body ball, cut in half. The flat half sits on the floor, and I stood on the ball part.

For the balance-challenged, like me, it can be a real bitch trying to stay up there on that bosu, and squat, stand and lift one leg. Again, my pegs were screaming. And when I finished a set and got off moaning, my trainer said something funny, "The bosu is not your friend."  So true!

We also did several sets of shoulder, tricep and chest presses with a plated bar. And we followed those sets with sets where I only raised the bar half way up. Whew! I wondered how I might drive my car home from the gym while I was pushing that bad boy away from my forehead.

I train again on Friday this week. Next week I am on my own, since my trainer will be sunning her bikini-ready body on the beaches of Cancun. We decided that i will do my first weigh-in the following week. So, stay tuned folks - and see if I am making progress.

Grilled Veggies for Dinner

Tonight I vowed to make something healthy for dinner, to make up for that italian pasta dish I had last night. I grilled some chicken, and the best part, some delicious vegetables. I have always loved eating grilled veggies out at a restaurant, but have always failed to get them right at home.

Tonight, I seasoned them differently and they turned out wonderfully. I cut up red pepper, zucchini and used whole mushrooms. I put them on skewers and sprinkled each with black pepper, Crazy Jane's mixed up salt, onion powder, and garlic powder. Then I gave each a skewer a few squirts of Wishbone's Salad Spritzers in the Balsamic Breeze vinaigrette flavor. I love this dressing, as it only has 1 calorie per spray and it really tastes good.

I put them on the grill for about 10 minutes, turning them a couple of times, to make sure they didn't burn on one side. Once the mushrooms were shriveled a little, I called them done. And sure enough - after my first bite, I said, "mmmm."  Success!

A Walking Marathon

It was my first weekend taking guests for sightseeing around NYC and whoa - did we do some serious walking!  It makes me feel less guilty about the italian dinner I ate last night!

We parked around 56th and 7th, and walked a few blocks to 5th avenue so we could take a little 4 year old for an American Girl doll. Then we walked about 10 blocks to FAO Schwarz, the toy store. Got Saxon his first R/C car there. Then we walked some more, until we decided to get a cab and go to Chinatown. We walked all along Canal street, buying handbags and Tiffany knockoffs. Then we stopped and got some dinner. After, we walked some more, before we got a cab back to the car. And then it was home for rest.

Sunday we drove to the Bronx zoo, and walked until our feet hurt. Then we drove to Battery Park and saw the Statue of Liberty. Ground Zero was a short distance away, so we walked there to see the construction work being done. Afterwards, we hiked back to the parking garage, and drove home. It was a quick freshen up and then we went to dinner and had some delicious italian food. I had fettucine with sausage, peppers, and onions in a marinara sauce. We then went home, picked up Charlotte and went for a great long walk by the river. It was dark when we got home.

All-in-all, I did eat some things that were probably not the best choices this weekend, but I also walked my ass off! And I had a blast with my friends. So, I think it was all worth it!

Kick-boxing bummer

I thought this morning's kick-boxing class was going to be taught by a guy named, Albert, who guest taught in a class I attended last week. I really loved his intensity, and was pumped about taking a full hour with him this morning. I got there, and the sub said he was traveling. :-(

So, I took class with someone else - I didn't even catch her name. All I can say is - BORING. It was just repetitive kicks and punches.

At any rate, I think the rest of the weekend will be good. I have a friend and her children coming to visit, and they want to do a lot of sightseeing in NYC. You know what that means - lots of walking! And the weather is awesome, so I am ready and roaring to go!

Who's the Hottest Super-Fit Male Celebrity?

I've been so focused on eating better and avoiding sweets, I figured a little eye-candy couldn't hurt! Feel free to comment on who you think is the uber-hottie in the group. My vote is a tie between Mario and LL Cool J!

Healthy Recipe: Pizza Quinoa Polenta

Here's a good looking recipe I found on www.fitsugar.com. I have never used polenta. But, I want to try this. I love pizza, and if this makes it healthy, and tastes good, I'm all for it!

Ingredients

1 tube of Quinoa Polenta
3 tablespoons olive oil
3 Roma tomatoes
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella

Directions

Pour the oil in a pan and heat on low.

Cut the polenta into 1/4 inch thick slices.

Place the polenta in the pan and cook each side so they're slightly golden brown.

Turn the oven on to 350° F.

Slice the tomatoes. Place the polenta on foil on a cookie sheet. Top each piece with a slice of tomato. Sprinkle with cheese and bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

Eat Protein within 15 minutes after strength training

I had another personal training session today with Cheryl. It went well. After two straight weeks of working out hard, and eating better, I am starting to feel like I am making progress. I feel stronger already.

We spent the hour working the whole body again. We started with some leg machines - working inner and outer thighs, quads, and hamstrings. I've always used the seated hamstring and quad machines - you know the ones where you extend your legs up and back. Little did I know though what a huge difference it makes when you point your toes. I naturally flex my foot when I do these exercises. After about a set of flexed foot lifts, Cheryl had me point my toes and do the same exercise. Yowsa! I could feel such a difference!

We again used dumbbells for upper body exercises, but today used a pulley machine with a rope to pull down for triceps. And of course a big honker of a dumbbell over my head for tricep extensions. My shoulders were burning from that too.

We finished off with some lovely abdominal exercises, included the dreaded crab walk thing. That's the one where I get into pushup position and walk across the floor, dragging my feet behind me that are resting on these fabric disks. (I'm sure there's some cool name for those things, but I have no idea what it is.)

I really like my new trainer. She's fun to be around, easy to talk to, and I don't feel like she is judging me on how I look or perform now, but instead, on what I can become.

Today's Workout: Blech!

Today I went to the gym for a couple of classes - a half hour abs class and an hour of kickboxing with an instructor who shall remain nameless. She taught both classes, and while I imagine she might be a nice person, she's not my cup of tea as an instructor. This woman, who is as fit as a fiddle, is like so many other instructors I have seen (even dated) in my years of working out. She wants to prove to the class that she's a bad-ass. She's strong, she's hardcore. Yeah, we get it. I've taken classes with her about a handful of times now, and each time I am turned off by her style. She wants to make it so difficult that people have to stop or feel sick. And when someone does stop to take a breather, she calls them out on it. God forbid you step out to go take a piss - she asks where you're going, over her mic, in a taunting voice that really annoys me. Today she told us 3 times she was going to make us sick, or that her class might kill us today. Then she walks around and "corrects" people and does so in a teasing manner. Honestly, it's these kind of people, in my opinion, who lack self esteem, and only feel better when they are known as the "tough" instructor.

But, she has a huge following. Her class was packed. Guess misery loves company!
I just know I am going to avoid her classes if I can help it.

One of my favorite workout partners

I thought I should introduce someone who has been my workout partner for 5 years now. She's the epitome of a loyal friend, and someone I love dearly. We have probably walked together every day since we met, and her energy level is always an inspiration. She runs and swims too. Her name is Charlotte, and she's my yellow labrador retriever.
While our walks have changed so much in the last 5 years, we still manage to get in a trot around the block everyday. At least. She's more of a 3-mile hike through the woods kind of girl. And when not chasing the scent of something tantalizing, she's a hellava tennis player!
Thanks, Charlotte, for giving me a reason to always exercise, and for dragging me along when another step seemed too many.

What to do with an almost rotten banana?

Just moments ago I was really feeling like I could have a frosty, frozen treat. But, seeing as I am trying to lose the weight that said frosty frozen treats put on, I decided to come up with an alternative. Fruit.
And that's when I saw the last banana sitting on the counter all by its lonesome. It was seriously ready for the trash - or so I thought. When peeled, it was soft, mushy and perfect for baking. Instead I threw it into the blender. Along with a handful of blueberries, about 6 strawberries, 2 cups of ice, and a cup of OJ.
And it made the perfect satisfying treat. Sweet naturally and refreshing. (I'm not saying a shot of rum wouldn't have made it better!)

Sore Muscles!

God, I am so sore this morning. You know it's gonna be bad when you're laying in bed and it hurts! It's mostly in my shoulders and upper back. Which means the band work we do today in Stroller Strides will hurt like a you-know-what! What's that saying, "no guts, no glory," "no pain, no gain," "I must-I must-I must increase my bust." No, that's definitely not it! Haha

I'll let you know how it goes later. Thanks for checking in.

Time to check in: it really wasn't so bad. The muscles definately hurt when they're cold, but once I got warmed up, it was just a slight pain. I was "comfortably uncomfortable" to quote the spin-queen, Hazel, from Can Do.  My trainer texted me today too, to see how I was feeling. Wouldn't it have been funny to write back and say, "Can't move, can't lift arms, can barely type this message."
I told her I was sore, and that I am looking forward to round 2 on Friday!

My first session with my new personal trainer

So this morning I had my first appointment with my new trainer, Cheryl. I was a little worried about it, because I felt spent after an hour of kickboxing before we started, but I recovered and felt pretty good. BTW - today's kickboxing class included a guest appearance from an instructor named Albert, whose intensity level reminded me of the old days of Yorktowne's Kick class with Paul Charb. We were doing a lot of knife slices, body chops and jumping knee thrusts. Hee-yaw!

Anyway, back to my training session - it covered all body parts, and already I feel sore. A good thing (no complaints!). This one item really worked my core: she had two little round fabric discs that she laid on the floor. I got down into pushup position, with my feet on the discs. I had to "drag" my legs behind me as I used my arms to walk my body across the floor. That was pretty tough. Other abdominal exercises included goodies on the ball, as well as Cheryl standing over me, and pushing my extended legs back to the floor, as I lifted them.
We did a bunch of hand weight exercises for my shoulders, biceps and triceps too. And the hardest part for me, the leg stuff - like walking lunges, knee lifts on a bench, squats with a weighted bar, etc.

It felt good when she told me that I was "easy to train," because my form was good, and I followed her instructions easily. I told her that it might be hard to believe looking at me now, but once upon a time I was pretty good at this stuff. And ya know what? The body doesn't forget. I may have let myself go the last two years, but my inner Xena Warrior Princess is itching to get out, and my body is along for the ride!

Muscle Maker Grill

I haven't been this excited since Tostitos came out with their lime-flavored chips!

A new restaurant is opening in Edgewater at the end of the week, called Muscle Maker Grill. Their tagline is "Great food with your health in mind." I grabbed a menu today, and the food selection is fabulous! I can't wait to get in there and try some of these goodies:

-Low carb items served over broccoli, like the Godfather - grilled chicken breast, portabella mushrooms, red roasted peppers, low-fat mozzarella and fat-free balsamic vinaigrette
-Power Pasta served on 100% whole wheat pasta
-Guiltless Entrees served with brown rice, steamed veggies - includes turkey chili, lemon pepper chicken, and more
-Low carb wraps, with 5 grams of fat or less
-32 oz. Protein smoothies
-fat-free salad dressings, 0 calorie butter spray on veggies
-Lots of sides that sound good, like cucumber salad, brown rice & beans, hard boiled eggs, turkey meatballs, Balsamic potato salad and more

The menu is really big, so there should be something for everyone. They deliver too. I CANNOT wait to try this place. As soon as I get a taste, I'll report back here with the verdict.

How did this happen?

As I sit here thinking about where I got off track with my fitness, diet and overall daily routine, I have to say that it all began when I got pregnant. And I swear, while I may complain about pregnancy and what it did to me, I would never-ever wish the experience away - as Saxon is my greatest joy - one that fitting into a size 4 never gave me.
About 2 weeks after discovering I was going to be a mommy, I started to get sick daily. And I mean puking-at-work-4-times-a-day sick. My poor co-workers, they had to endure my trips to the restroom, and my green face, for over 4 months. During this time, I honestly just couldn't make it to the gym. So in essence, what had been a daily routine of mine, came to a very abrupt stop. I continued to walk my dog, simply out of obligation to Charlotte. But, the strenuous walks on a hilly golf course became 15-minute walks around the neighborhood.
I was sick so often I lost weight in those first 4 months. But, by the end of the 9-months, I had gained nearly 50 pounds.
After having Saxon, I tried to get back to the gym during my maternity leave. However, I went back to work at 8 weeks, and my little bundle of joy went into full-time daycare. After giving my baby to someone else for 10 hours out of the day, I honestly did not want to go to the gym, and put him right back into yet another daycare. It felt selfish to me. So, for the longest time I worked, and came home to care for Saxon, Char and our home. Damon was in Iraq at the time, and the gym became a sporadic option for the weekends.
And so it was that way for almost 2 years. Until Damon came home from Iraq, and we moved out here to NJ. Now, I have the luxury of working from home part-time, and Saxon stays home with me. So, I feel free to go to the gym, and give Saxon a couple of hours of socialization with kids his own age. I feel confident I can get back into the swing of things, and get into shape again. I really do. Thanks for supporting me, and listening to my stories.

Spinning and Boot Camp - what was I thinking?!?

This morning's classes might have me limping slightly for the rest of the day.

I started off at 9:30 with spinning. I am liking this class, simply because I know I am getting something done - my legs have got to tone up from this and the intensity of the cardio aspect is off the charts! This morning's instructor, Hazel, said something I won't forget..."right now you should be comfortably uncomfortable."  Comfortably uncomfortable! And guess what? I was! My quads were indeed hurting and burning. But only to the point where I might "puff" at the fire, like trying to blow out candles. Not hurting so much that I might want to empty a bucket of water to extinguish the flames!

I made it through spinning and really wanted to get in some lifting, or sculpting. I saw they were having a "boot camp" class at 10:30, so I headed there. I saw the participants set up to go with body bars, hand weights, and steps, so I thought this was right up my alley. However, little did I know this class would include a bunch of cardio!  Didn't I just put my heart through the ringer with Spinning? Uggh - we were led to do all kinds of bursting activities, like bounding up onto the step, and jumping off and on. My knees HATED me! I did modify to an extent (even though I felt like an old fart) to lesson the impact.

To say the least, I got through class, feeling good that I endured and lived by my old gym motto, "suck it up buttercup."

Cucumber, Mango and Spinach Salad

This recipe, from my friend Wendy, sounds yummy and is from The Cancer Project. It boasts beta-carotene from the mango and lutein from the spinach, which are cousins in the carotenoid family and important antioxidants. Aside from cancer prevention and survival, lutein is recognized for its key role in eye health.

1 Bag (10 ounces) or bunch fresh spinach
1 Mango, peeled and cut into bite size pieces
1 Large cucumber, peeled and sliced
6 green onions, thinly sliced
1/2 cup thinly sliced  fresh basil
Juice of 1 lime (about 3 tablespoons)
1/4 cup seasoned rice vinegar
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste

Wash and drain spinach, tear into bite size pieces, if necessary, and put into a large serving bowl. Toss mango, cucumber, green onions, and basil in a medium bowl. Add lime juice and vinegar and stir to mix. Arrange mango mixture on spinach and sprinkle with black pepper.

Makes 10-12 servings.

Hoopnotica

I went to the Hoopnotica website just to check this hooping thing out. Interesting.
I'm not sure I'd ever be able to manuever that plastic ring around my torso, let alone up around my neck! But, it sure looks like fun! I am going to do some digging and see if I can find a class nearby! And if I do, you can be sure to get pics!

Here's the Hoopnotica website. I watched a video with some washboard-belly women swinging the hoop seductively around their entire bodies! It reminded me of belly-dancing. Anyway, they have lots more info, and even sell cute clothes to hula-hoop in!

http://www.hoopnotica.com/

Lose weight with a hula-hoop??

I found this article online at NY Daily News. It's about a new fitness craze hitting NYC - the hula-hoop!!  Check out the video!

To get long and lean, think round.

The latest exercise trend to hit New York is as old school as they get - Hula Hooping - and it's gaining a growing number of devotees across the city.

"It's definitely been getting more popular," said hoop dance instructorJanet Yen, 34, of the lower East Side, who said she has hosted classes for everyone from bachelorette parties to high-powered law firms.

"When I started, people had no idea what I was doing. I would carry my hoop around and people would say, 'Wow, is that a Hula Hoop?'"

"It's old-fashioned, wholesome fun and it's easy," she said. "I don't think people get to kind of let their hair down that often."

Sheryl Wilson, 30, of Turtle Bay, leads a group of 90 hooping devotees and will host an introductory class and free "Hoop Fest" on Saturday in Central Park.

"It's a great way to work out and burn a lot of calories, tone all the muscles in the body, while having so much fun that you don't even know you're working out," she said. "It's a reminder of your childhood days."

But these hoops aren't exactly like the Toys "R" Us versions you remember. Hoops from Hoopnotica, which also offers instructional DVDs, are heavier, weighing about a pound and a half, and pricier, running from $35 to $50.

The trend is spreading with the help of the Internet, where hoopers upload clips of their routines. "You can look online and see all these new tricks," Wilson said.

Wilson is relatively new to hooping, which was first popularized on the West Coast and is just catching on in New York. She started last September while pregnant with her first child, 6-week-old Shayna.

"I was never able to do it as a kid," she confessed. She said the sturdier, adult-sized hoop is easier to maneuver.

"People can just pick it up," Wilson said. "Somebody who has no fitness background, who doesn't work out, no dance experience, uncoordinated, can still do it."

Natalie Jackson, 29, an East Harlem attorney, said she was turned off by traditional workouts and had let her gym membership lapse.

"I'm not a natural athlete," she said. But now she can show off to friends with hoop twirls over her head. "It looks more difficult than it is."

Hoopnotica makes special, lighter hoops for pregnant women and kids as young as 3. Wilson kept hooping throughout her pregnancy.

"You get kind of bored with the same old prenatal yoga," she said, adding Shayna seemed to get a kick out of her routines even in the womb.

Rae Moore, 29, a mom-to-be from the upper West Side, started classes in January after hearing about hooping online. "I'd done it as a kid, but never structured in that way. You just kind of twirl it around and you hope for the best," she said.

"It seems very counterintuitive: you have this huge belly and you're Hula Hooping," said Moore, who is seven months pregnant. "But it gets you back in tune with your...muscles."

Guilty Weekend

Well, as I sit here writing this, I am feeling guilty. One, I did not exercise yet today, and two - I feel bad because I broke down and ate rice last night. I've been pretty good about avoiding processed carbs, like the delicious rice-a-roni. But, we came to visit the inlaws this weekend, and she cooked on the grill with some yummy rice side dish. So, not only did I have some - I had seconds!! Now I feel all puffy and wish I could go back in time and just say no!!

And to top it off, we're going to go to dinner later tonight. Oh god - faced with a menu full of french fries and cheesy things, will I be able to pass, or will I succumb to the fried deliciousness?? I really hope they seat me next to some super-model -looking woman, so I can be shamed into ordering a salad!

Tonight, when we get home, I am giving Saxon to grandma, and I am putting on my new Nike's and going out for a run - okay, probably more like a brisk walk!

Two classes back to back

I wish I could report on how my first session of personal training was this morning; however, my trainer couldn't make it. She's also the group fitness manager, and one of her instructors called out sick, so she had to fill in. It wasn't a total loss, because the class she was subbing for Body Pump, a weight-training class. So, after I took spinning, I went right into the Body Pump class.

Back in the day, doing 2, even 3 classes back to back was no big deal. At Yorktowne, I remember stepping, kicking and doing Pump all in a 3 hour period, and could still take Char for a good walk later. Today, I was hurting. It was my knees. I am finding after I spin (did it 3 times this week), that my left knee "bothers" me a little. Then when we were doing the lunges track in Pump, ooh-la-la - it really bothered me. I felt old. :-(

I was definitely challenged. I do hope that with time, this all gets easier. Two classes back to back made me worry about next week, when I will have PT after taking a class.
We shall see how it goes.

Spinning and 5 Energy Zones

Hi everyone,

This morning I took a spinning class at my gym with a great instructor named Hazel. It was my 2nd spin class at this facility, and my first time with Hazel. She was really nice, and mentioned something I had never heard of: The 5 Energy Rides and how each one differs and is good for something different, like endurance, strength, etc. Since I didn't have time after class to talk at length with her about these 5 things and get a good understanding, I decided to look it up online.

I found a complete description, along with a fantastic heart rate chart online at www.spinning.com. I am sharing this information for any spinners who are reading, or for those of you at home with a stationary bike who might like to consider this the next time you exercise.

Apparently, when you are spinning, there's 5 energy zones you should be working out at, each with it's own benefits. This is great to know, as I just thought spinning was all about pedaling as fast as you can! (and icing your crotch afterwards!)

Endurance Energy Zone™

The lowdown: Endurance training is your foundation and should constitute the bulk of your workouts.
The payoff: Shorter recovery times, higher fat metabolism and a lower resting heart rate.

Resistance: Light to moderate
Cadence: 80–110 RPM
Intensity: 65%–75% of maximum heart rate
Frequency: 3–4 times per week

Strength Energy Zone™

The lowdown: Using high resistance and a slower cadence, you'll hover between aerobic and anaerobic zones.
The payoff: Tone your legs and build your mental strength.

Resistance: Moderate to heavy
Cadence: 60–80 RPM
Intensity: 75%–85% of maximum heart rate
Frequency: 1–2 times per week after building a strong aerobic base

Interval Energy Zone™

The lowdown: Alternate bursts of speed and power with recovery.
The payoff: You'll increase your aerobic and anaerobic capacity, which will lead to bolstered stamina and endurance.

Resistance: Light to heavy
Cadence: 60–110 RPM
Intensity: 65%–92% of maximum heart rate
Frequency: 1 workout per week after building a strong aerobic base

Race Day Energy Zone™

The lowdown: Challenge your body and celebrate your strength.
The payoff: Training at or above anaerobic threshold teaches your body to perform at higher intensities.

Resistance: Moderate to heavy
Cadence: 80–110 RPM
Intensity: 80%–92% maximum heart rate
Frequency: Monthly

Recovery Energy Zone™

The lowdown: Without sufficient rest, your body can't get stronger.
The payoff: Recovery Rides promote healing and circulate oxygen to tired muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Resistance: Light
Cadence: 80–110 RPM
Intensity: 50–65% of maximum heart rate
Frequency: 1–2 times per week
