The Beach Burn

I promised I would talk about all of the wonderful exercise we had during our trip to Florida last week. We flew down for my sister-in-law's wedding, and enjoyed every minute of our stay. We arrived Wednesday, after an early 4 am start. Needless to say, I wasn't up for a trip to the gym, but we did make our way to the beach.

As anyone with a toddler knows, the days of laying on a towel and soaking in the sun are over. I would have loved to be still and get some rays, but instead, my little guy demanded more physical fun. So, I chased him around on the beach, and helped him "jump" the waves, by lifting him - over and over again. When my wonderful sister-in-law took over the "Saxon entertainment" duties, Damon and I enjoyed the water. And I honestly had forgotten how much you feel the resistance of the water against your legs. By the time we climbed out of the ocean, my quads were burning!

Thursday morning Damon and I headed to the hotel's gym. We did a full-body session with hand weights. It was fun because we switched back and forth with who would choose the particular exercise. We did 3 sets of 12 reps for each exercise, and when we had completed the whole body, we went back and did it all over again, with new exercises. It was a great workout, and I definitely felt it the next day. My legs were so sore!!!

Later that afternoon we all went to a water park. What fun!! But, boy oh boy, the amount of stairs we had to climb was insane! It was like the place was built on a cliff! Up and down we walked. We even referred to one crazy steep set of stairs as the "stairs from hell!"

The remainder of the trip included early morning walks on the beach. And for anyone who's never walked with my mother-in-law, you had better plan on walking uber fast! When she asked me to walk with her, I thought it would be a nice STROLL. You know - where you look for shells and enjoy the sounds of the waves rolling in. Hell no! She walked like her ass was on fire! I honestly could barely keep up with her.

As for any other exercise we might have gotten during this trip - I'd have to include dancing. We danced quite a bit at Vanessa's reception. My son was a little dance machine, and wanted to be held and swayed around too. Fun, but exhausting. I was ready for bed by 10:30!

And if all of that wasn't enough, there was the airport run-for-your-life, or should I say, run-for-your-connection sprint from one side of the airport to another. (We landed with 20 minutes to departure time of our next flight.) When we finally reached the next concourse, I was hoping gate B-2 was at the beginning of the hall. But, no, fate doesn't make things that easy. Instead, the front started with something like gate B-40. I ran as fast as I could to get to B-2 and stop the plane from leaving without us! By the time I reached B-4 I thought I might die. I slowed to a fast walk and prayed I wasn't too late. Thankfully, the plane was still there. Poor Damon - he was behind me, going as fast as he could, holding our 50-pound sack of potatoes called Saxon! We both sighed a breath of relief, and boarded.

So, while I didn't get my usual array of exercise classes for a few days, I would say I had my fair share of physical activity. And what's better than sweating while getting a suntan!
